Curriculum Overview
Math
Grades:
70% Tests-chapter test, vocabulary test
30% Daily grades, mid-chapter checkpoint, timed tests, homework grades, daily quizzes
Our school uses Go Math! as our core math program. Skills that are covered are mental math, multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, measurement, and lots of problem solving. Our chapter test will consist of word problems that the students must read, decide on a plan, and solve. In third grade, multiplication is crucial. The students must learn the multiplication facts. We will have timed test throughout the year.
Reading workshop
Grades:
70% Tests-comprehension tests, vocabulary test
30% Daily grades-graphic organizers, written responses, class work/homework, oral presentations
This year we will implement the common core standards in reading and language. During the year we will be writing in our reader’s response journals, we will be reading Time for Kids magazine, National Geographic Explorer, EPSCO articles, read-aloud, and will be incorporating our content (science and social studies) in our reading. Some reading grades will also be counted as a science or social studies grade.
I do not count AR as a reading test unless I have read the book to the students and had conversations to help with comprehension. This year instead of keeping up with AR points, I will be having a book challenge each semester. I will explain this to the students and send home more
Information soon. The book challenge will be used as an incentive throughout the year. We will plan reading celebrations each trimester.
Throughout the year we will also have book talk café. The students LOVE this!!
Writing Workshop/Word Study
Grades:
70% Tests-DOL Test, paragraph edit test, writing samples, word study assessments
30% Daily grades-word study practice, quizzes, daily class work
This year we will be using mentor text to help the students become better writers. I will be pulling grammar skills from the writing, along with teaching the skills from the DOL and paragraph editing assignments. Third grade will NOT be giving a weekly spelling test. Instead I will be having conferences with students and helping each with words that they need to master in their writing.
Social Studies
Grades:
70% Tests- unit test, vocabulary test, group projects, daily geography test
30% Daily grades-graphic organizers, written responses
Third grade social studies deal with students learning about historical places and people, societal values, and cultural traditions. We will learn geography and map skills. Many concepts will be incorporated into our reading block.

30% Daily grades-graphic organizers, written response, labs
Our science units are plant life, human body, rocks and mineral, chemical changes, natural disasters and weather, simple machines, and many more intriguing topics. Some units will involve hands-on learning. Science units will be incorporated into our reading block.

Homework Policy
According to school board policy, a student has 3 days to complete and turn in any missed assignments. If you know you are going out of town and that your child will be missing school, you can let me know and I will give the student all the work that they will miss. By doing this, this will allow your child to stay up to date and not fall behind while they are away from school.
